The Schlern Natural Park covers an area of about 6,806 hectares and it includes three towns: Kastelruth, Völs am Schlern and Tiers. The natural park is named after the Schlern, a mountain massif of the Western Dolomites, which has become one of the symbols of South Tyrol. The park also encompasses the woods around Tiers, Völs and Seis as well as the Tschamin Valley. In the summer the Natural Parks Provincial Office, together with the area's Tourism Associations, organizes marvelous excursions. Expert mountain guides are at your complete disposal. Their job is to show you the beauties of the Natural Park and to make sure that visitors behave in an environmental-friendly manner. These excursions are an unforgettable experience! Schlern is surrounded by mixed woods of conifers near the towns of Seiser, Völser und Tiers. The woods on the northeastern side of Seiser are populated mainly by red fir and larches and, to a lesser extent, by pine, ash, birch and sorb trees. Lake Völs is surrounded by pine trees. The pine trees reach an altitude of approx. 1600 m. The Völs zone is populated also by Swiss stone pines. The ridge of the Tschafon and Tschamin Valley is marked by the presence of red fir, larch and long-trunked pine trees. Isolated patches of woods covered by bushes rich in berries are populated by a wide variety of wild birds. In this area you can also see woodpeckers and owls. The area's typical mountain wildlife includes crossbills and tits.
